Painted Wine Glasses

Venture name:

Personalized Wine Glasses

Chapters:

Penn State, Syracuse

Description:

This Venture is great around the holidays, for big/little gifts among Greek life, and for any occasion when people might give personalized gifts.

Penn State sells their glasses throughout the year through an online form. Syracuse sold them at a speed dating Valentines event, a Halloween Thrift Sale, and a Holiday Sale.

This Venture is fun, not too time consuming, and quite effective if you have members with some artistic skill.

(Penn St) “We sell personalized wine glasses and beer mugs. Students can place their order through a google form, describing how they would like the piece to be designed. It makes a great gift for any occasion.”

Marketing:

Instagram has been used most by other Chapters, Facebook also. Speaking at sororities and fraternities about the sale has also been effective.

(Penn St) “We marketed this product through our various social media platforms and by word of mouth. We marketed the product to various organizations we knew the product would appeal to and were sure to promote the product around specific holidays as well. We spent money on purchasing the wine glasses/beer mugs, paints and paintbrushes. ”

Revenue and Expenses:

(Penn St) “We were very careful to spend carefully for this Venture; we bought the actual wine glasses in bulk from WalMart and purchased the beer mugs at the dollar store, as those orders were less than the wine glass orders. We found that we received a better deal purchasing the wine glasses in bulk. We shopped around on Amazon and at Wal-Mart for the best prices on glasses and paints. The paintbrushes and paints were able to be carried over from year to year. Last semester we made around $200 in wine glass sales.”

Profits and Other benefits of Venture (Marketing for an upcoming event, advance ticket sales, social value created, etc.):

(Penn St) “The Venture definitely does make profit and was very popular. It can be marketed for any and all events really such as birthdays, holidays and many other occasions. ”

Challenges:

(Penn St) “The Venture doesn’t take too much time and planning. The main thing we have to plan is deciding which member can best design the specific order placed. If we were unable to provide the design the customer wanted, we let them knew what we could and couldn’t do and worked with them to come up with a design they equally liked.”

Tips:

(Penn St) “Marketing is definitely a huge part of this Venture and crucial for getting sales. Holidays are a great time to market the Venture as a potential gift. Overall, it is an appropriate Venture to keep year round.”

Would you recommend to other chapters?:

(Penn St) “This Venture would be highly recommended for others Chapters. If this is something members of the Chapter believe they can accomplish, then it would be a great Venture to pursue.”
